Biking apps help you get the most out of your bike trips!

Free Apps You Should Get

These free apps should be all you need. We highly recommend downloading them to your phone for use while biking.

Google Maps App

Google Maps is something everybody probably already has on their phone.  There is a bicycling layer that you can conjure up when you click on the layers icon.  It is a great resource.  Unfortunately, it will not route you exclusively on bike-only trails - it always seems to want to take you down the bike lanes on the side of busy streets. Plus, the shades of green for bike lanes and bike trails are too similar.

Google Earth App

You should get this app on your phone and then follow the directions on the MAPS PAGE to get the Indiana Bike Map available on your phone.

Organic Maps App

This is a must-have app.  It is a wonderful mapping universe that rivals Google Maps.  You should download this app and then follow the instructions on the MAPS PAGE to get the Indiana Bike Map layer to work on this app.

Indiana DNR Trails App

This is a must-have app.  Indiana DNR does a great job with this app. It is a bit tricky to find the Indiana Biking Trails section, but if you have trouble then let us know on the Facebook Group and we will add instructions here.

Paid Apps

Several apps arenโ€™t very useful unless you pay.  Those 10 bucks a month expenses really add up, and the extra work you have to do eats into your biking time.  However, if you use any of these apps and find them useful, please let us know in the Indiana Biking Facebook group.

TrailLink

In 2023 we did pay for the app from https://www.traillink.com/.  It is a great source of info for the Indiana Bike trails.  However, the app is not very useful unless you pay $29 per year.  The website is still useful without paying, and you should check it out.  We thought it was worth the money, but hopefully I can find something better for 2024.

Komoot

This app is for planning routes of all kinds, and it costs $4.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Find it at https://www.komoot.com/.

Ride with GPS

Ride with GPS is a good app with good bike routing, but it costs $79 per year or $10 per month (well, actually $9.99 per month, if it makes you feel better about the purchase ๐Ÿ™‚).  You can plan your routes with this app and it will tell you elevation changes and help you record your routes and stuff like that. Find it at https://ridewithgps.com/.

Strava

This app costs $11.99 per month or $79.99 per year plus applicable taxes.  It allows you to record your routes and times and post this info.  It has biking and running trails. Find it at https://www.strava.com/.
